Lana Keigley, LPN, was honored with the DAISY Award for Extraordinary Nurses at Sarah Bush Lincoln on October 5.
Keigley was nominated by a co-worker for going above and beyond to provide compassionate care to her patients. Her co-worker shared the following story:
“Lana is the perfect example of an extraordinarily caring and compassionate nurse. I have had the privilege of working with Lana on several occasions and her caring nature always shines through, but one specific incident stands out in my memory and leads me to this nomination. While working at the Effingham Walk-in Clinic, we had an injured individual walk to the clinic for treatment. Due to a fall and upper extremely injury, this person did not have access to a vehicle and walked several blocks to be evaluated at the clinic. Following the visit, Lana tried to arrange transportation to the patient’s home. When she was unable to do so, Lana gave the patient a ride home after making sure the clinic was adequately covered. She did not hesitate to think of the patient’s care and comfort. Although Lana thought her act of kindness was ‘no big deal,’ it was evident in the patient’s kind words and hug that Lana’s gesture was heartfelt and greatly appreciated.
This is just one example of why I feel that Lana is a perfect person to be nominated for a DAISY Award. She has a large, thoughtful, and empathetic heart that is evident in her nursing skills. She did more than just help treat a patient with an injury, she truly treated the whole individual with care and consideration. I feel truly lucky to have had the opportunity to work with a wonderful, caring, and compassionate nurse like Lana Keigley.”
Sarah Bush Lincoln has joined more than 2,700 healthcare facilities by becoming a DAISY Award hospital partner. During the award presentation, Keigley received a certificate, a DAISY Award pin and a unique, hand-carved serpentine stone sculpture from Zimbabwe, entitled, “A Healer’s Touch.”
The DAISY Award was established in memory of J. Patrick Barnes, who died at 33 of complications of Idiopathic Thrombocytopenic Purpura (ITP), a little known but not uncommon auto-immune disease. (DAISY is an acronym for diseases attacking the immune system.) The care Patrick and his family received from nurses while he was ill inspired this unique means of thanking nurses for making a profound difference in the lives of their patients and families.
Patients, visitors, nurses, physicians and other employees may nominate a deserving nurse for The Daisy Award and a nurse will be selected by SBL’s DAISY committee every month to received this special honor.
