April 2019 SBL DAISY Nurse Award Recipient

May 2, 2019 11:27 a.m.

Staci Murbarger, LPN, was honored with the DAISY Award for Extraordinary Nurses at Sarah Bush Lincoln on April 30.

Murbarger was nominated for making a big impression on a patient at Charleston Family Practice. In her letter, the patient expressed her gratitude to Murbarger for going above and beyond to provide years of compassionate care.

“Staci has provided more than a decade of care to both my husband and myself and she has shown compassion and dedication with each appointment or health issue. No matter how long between appointments, she greets us as if we are friends, and I definitely feel the genuine compassion with the care she provides. Regardless of the issue at hand, Staci always follows through and is very knowledgeable with the logistics, medications, education on diseases, and wellness phone calls.

Staci truly embodies the qualities of an extraordinary nurse who makes an enormous difference in the lives of her patients for years. If I was to provide only a single example, it would be from several years ago during an unexpected illness. Staci not only stayed with my husband and I while making expedited referrals and the scheduling of tests, but she arranged for us to see a specialist very quickly. Her actions eased some of our emotional burden at a critical time. Staci is an exceptional nurse and her years of caring and compassion have not gone unrecognized by her patients.”

Sarah Bush Lincoln has joined more than 2,700 healthcare facilities by becoming a DAISY Award hospital partner. During the award presentation, Murbarger received a certificate, a DAISY Award pin and a unique, hand-carved serpentine stone sculpture from Zimbabwe, entitled, “A Healer’s Touch.”

The DAISY Award was established in memory of J. Patrick Barnes, who died at 33 of complications of Idiopathic Thrombocytopenic Purpura (ITP), a little known but not uncommon auto-immune disease. (DAISY is an acronym for diseases attacking the immune system.) The care Patrick and his family received from nurses while he was ill inspired this unique means of thanking nurses for making a profound difference in the lives of their patients and families.

Patients, visitors, nurses, physicians and other employees may nominate a deserving nurse for The Daisy Award and a nurse will be selected by SBL’s DAISY committee every month to received this special honor. Nomination forms are located at www.sarahbush.org and at all SBL clinics and on patient floors. The forms can be submitted to any Sarah Bush Lincoln staff member, or sent via email to [email protected] or mail to Sarah Bush Lincoln, DAISY Nursing Award, 1000 Health Center Drive, Mattoon, IL 61938.
