The EMS Department of Sarah Bush Lincoln Health Center provides medical oversight, primary and continued education, and serves as the resource hospital for multiple EMS agencies that cover nine counties in Central Illinois and include all levels of providers from Emergency Medical Responders (First Responders), to paramedic ALS level services.
In addition, the EMS Dept. also provides medical oversight and continuing education for five different county-based 911 dispatch centers, over 50 Emergency Medical Dispatchers, and 76 agencies that have Public Access Defibrillators on their premises. The total amount of licensed personnel is in excess of 900 individuals serving those nine counties, and providing services to a total population of approximately 190,000.
The EMS Department also offers community courses and specialty courses for continuing and first time educational needs. They operate one of the largest Community Training Centers for the American Heart Association, providing oversight for 250 AHA instructors who provide training for more than 8500 community and healthcare members annually. Community training opportunities also exist for daycare providers and industry workers in the form of First Aid Courses, and Bloodborne Pathogen training, and Stop the Bleed courses.
Specialty Courses offered for Medical Personnel include: Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS), Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS), International Trauma Life Support (ITLS), Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR), Emergency Communications Radio Nurse (ECRN), Pre-Hospital Registered Nurse (PHRN), and Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI). Dysrhythmia courses are offered to healthcare professionals, and a course on advanced physical assessment.
Through a partnership with Lake Land Community College, SBL provides licensed instructors in emergency medicine for the Emergency Services Program. Those courses taught include the Emergency Medical Technician-Basic (EMT-B), EMT-Paramedic (EMT-P) and the First Responder (FR-D) Programs, EMT-B refresher courses are also offered.
